What Are The Challenges for Gate Valves in Marine Engineering

Gate valves are another common component in marine pipelines, especially when large-diameter flow control is needed. However, they come with challenges that engineers must address.

One of the main issues is corrosion and scaling. Constant exposure to seawater and humid environments can cause rust buildup, which affects sealing and makes the valve difficult to operate. Using cast bronze or duplex stainless steel gate valves helps reduce this problem, but proper maintenance remains essential.

Another challenge is space and weight constraints. Gate valves are bulkier than ball or butterfly valves. On vessels where every centimeter counts, engineers must balance valve size with accessibility for operation and maintenance.

Valve seat wear is also a common concern. Repeated opening and closing can cause damage to the sealing surface, leading to leaks. Regular inspection and lubrication, as well as using resilient-seated or rising-stem gate valves, can help mitigate these issues.
