What Are The Types of Globe Valves

What Is a Globe Valve

A globe valve controls flow using a movable disk (or plug) that moves perpendicular to the seat. This design allows for fine throttling, reliable sealing, and effective shut-off, especially in steam, cooling water, fuel oil, and chemical systems.

Common Types of Globe Valves

1. Z-Type Globe Valve (Tee Pattern)

  • ①Design: The stem and disk move vertically; the seat is horizontal.

  • ②Best For: Excellent throttling; common in water treatment, fuel systems, and marine pipelines.

  • ③Advantages: Easy to maintain, good control capability.

  • ④Disadvantage: High pressure drop due to flow path changes.

2. Y-Type Globe Valve

  • ①Design: The seat and stem are at a 45° angle.

  • ②Best For: High-pressure, high-flow applications with less resistance.

  • ③Advantages: Lower pressure drop than Z-type; good for high-temperature service.

  • ④Disadvantage: More complex to manufacture and repair.

3. Angle Globe Valve

  • ①Design: Inlet and outlet ports are at a 90° angle.

  • ②Best For: Where piping turns are needed (e.g., in cooling systems and condensate lines).

  • ③Advantages: Eliminates the need for an elbow; reduced turbulence.

  • ④Disadvantage: Limited use for high throttling precision.

4. Bellows Seal Globe Valve

  • ①Design: Includes a metallic bellows to seal the stem, preventing leakage.

  • ②Best For: Toxic, radioactive, or hazardous fluids in marine or chemical processing.

  • ③Advantages: Zero stem leakage; long life.

  • ④Disadvantage: More expensive and requires precision installation.

5. Needle Type Globe Valve

  • ①Design: A long, tapered needle-shaped disk for very fine throttling.

  • ②Best For: Instrumentation and small-bore flow control.

  • ③Advantages: High accuracy, excellent for low flow.

  • ④Disadvantage: Not suitable for large pipelines or quick shut-off.

6. Stop Check Globe Valve

  • ①Design: Combines features of globe and check valves.

  • ②Best For: Preventing reverse flow while allowing manual shut-off.

  • ③Advantages: Dual functionality, ideal for critical systems.

  • ④Disadvantage: Slightly more complex construction.
